28 year old Willa Newton from Leicestershire achieved a Top 10 placing at one of the most prestigious and toughest 4* events in the world, when finishing 8th in the 2018 Land Rover Burghley International Horse Trials last weekend (30 August-2 September) in what is one of the highlights of her career to date.
She rode the 16 year old gelding Chance Remark (affectionately known as Austen) owned by Feena Machin and Peter Thomas to finish on a double clear, moving up from 24th position after the dressage, having broken her collar bone only 6 weeks previously.
Willa was the youngest rider to finish in the Top 10 and in world class company with senior leading international riders, Tim Price (NZL), current World No 1 Oliver Townend and Andrew Nicholson (NZL) taking the first 3 placings respectively.
“Although we had an interrupted preparation for Burghley, I was determined to build on our good 5th result in the Luhmuhlen 4*. Austen felt amazing all week, from start to finish. He came out of cross country so well and it was such a thrill to be showjumping in the final top 10. The atmosphere was electric.
“I would like to thank Feena and Peter for all their support and giving me this opportunity, and the team at Jack Berry House in Malton for getting me back in the saddle in time,” commented Willa.
Long time Willa Newton eventing team groom, Janet Willis, took the coveted Burghley grooms award, which was hugely deserved. Click here for more details.
