Willa Newton is one of five event riders to be selected by the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) for the UK Sport National Lottery funded World Class Programme Podium Potential squad for 2019-2021.
The 2019-2021 podium potential squad in eventing is made up of the following athletes: Tom Jackson (Kent), Richard Jones (Leicestershire), Harry Meade (Wiltshire), Willa Newton (Leicestershire) and Georgie Spence (Wiltshire).
They made up a total of 25 athletes from the Olympic and Paralympic equestrian disciplines who were invited to Warwick University last week for their induction and to meet members of the World Class Programme team.
The application and selection process assessed athlete and horse combinations on their potential to compete on a Senior Championship team for Great Britain and add to its medal success. This process included athletes being evaluated on a range of areas which included their competition record, performance attitude and the health and fitness of themselves and their horses.
Commented Willa: “I am hugely honoured to be back on the squad and am incredibly excited for this opportunity.”
